Community Monitoring
In various communities across California and the rest of the country, residents are showing huge concerns about the quality of the air they breathe in and its negative impacts on their health and those of their employees and loved ones. Their fears are not unfounded.
The World Bank Organization estimates that the yearly 4.2 million deaths due to lung cancer, stroke, and heart diseases are caused by ambient air pollution, more than making a case for community air quality monitoring projects or systems.

What is Community Air Quality Monitoring?
Community air quality monitoring projects utilize trusted technologies to measure pollutants, raise awareness of air pollution, address air quality concerns, and effect positive changes in the community.
Data collected from community air quality monitoring projects can be used by individuals to reduce exposure and guard against dangerous pollutants. Local regulatory bodies can also rely on these data to formulate policies that aim to reduce the emission of pollutants.
Get Real-time Quality Data from ObservAir®
For community air quality monitoring projects to achieve their aim, they must be backed by accurate and reliable data. Distributed Sensing Technology is proud to offer ObservAir®innovative sensors you can rely on for your projects.
With our network-ready sensors, we’ve partnered with many organizations and supported different projects, including the community air quality study in West Oakland, California.
Community Air Quality Monitoring in West Oakland
The West Oakland community is about 7 square miles in size and has a population of around 25,000.
The community has a high air pollution exposure burden, with diesel trucks, buses, and port operations as the major sources of pollution.
As a result of the exposure, residents of the community have some of the highest rates of asthma, stroke, and cardiovascular diseases.
In 2017, the Environmental Defense Fund, in collaboration with UC Berkeley, developed the 100×100 Black Carbon Network.
The community air quality monitoring study utilized black carbon monitors deployed by Distribution Sensing Tech to collect data throughout the community.
DST also developed an interactive web dashboard that displayed comprehensible, easy-to-understand, real-time data that pinpointed pollution sources and levels, enlightening community members on ways to reduce pollution and limit exposure.
