Diesel Pollution Sensors

Updated: Feb 4, 2022

Ships, trains, and highway vehicles such as trucks and some cars run on diesel. Some non-road equipment, including mining machines and farm machinery, is also powered by diesel. In fact, according to the Environmental Protection Agency, about one-third of the transportation fleet in the US consists of vehicles running on diesel.

However, the widespread use of diesel engines has resulted in a major cause of concern - diesel pollution. In 2020 alone, CO2 emissions from diesel vehicles number to about 432 million metric tons.

Dangerous Effects of Diesel Pollution

When burned, diesel fuel emits other harmful pollutants such as:

  • Nitrogen Oxide (NOx)

  • Diesel Particulate Matter (containing soot, benzene, 1,3-butadiene, formaldehyde, and other known cancer-causing organic compounds)

  • Hydrocarbons

Poor Health - These emissions are dangerous to health, causing lung and heart disease and other challenges. The damaging effects of diesel emissions are not limited to humans. Plants and animals are also being increasingly impacted.

Reduced Visibility - Diesel emissions also contribute to haze, which reduces visibility. This is due to particle emissions that absorb sunlight and scatter light particles.

Climate Change - Diesel Particulate Matter consists of Black Carbon, the second-largest contributor to global warming.

Enter, Diesel Pollution Sensors!

In a world where exhaust filters have failed, the use of diesel pollution sensors to reduce the dissipation of pollutants into the air and comply with the EPA’s stringent regulations is a no-brainer.

Advancement in technology has seen the development of a range of IoT sensors capable of detecting dangerous diesel emissions. Distributed Sensing Technologies’ ObservAir smart sensors not only detect the presence of dangerous gases but also correctly measure the levels and transmit them to you in real-time, no matter where you are.
